Definition of Online safety (sometimes known as e-safety, cyber safety, etc.)

The broad definition of online safety refers to the practices and precautions one should take when using the internet. In more detail there are many areas to consider, such as:

  • protection of personal information (name, address, bank details, etc.)
  • being careful when using social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, Instagram) and avoiding privacy breaches, etc.
  • online safety for children and protecting them from unsuitable content, paedophiles and online bullying, etc.
  • protecting your computer against viruses, malware, etc., and your email from scammers, hackers, etc.
